Why a book?
I’ve shared my art with others in a few different ways before (prints, commissions, etc.), but I’ve always wanted to create a book.
I’ve mentioned before about how important I believe context is when looking at art. Of course a single piece can stand on its own beautifully, but seeing an artist’s work as a collective feels much more magical to me. I love being able to look over their work as a whole and see how different pieces vary and evolve. I have dozens of books by other artists, and I love popping them open and experiencing a bit of what goes on in their mind.
My biggest motivation for creating and sharing my art with others is to demonstrate that evolution. I love working towards mastery and sharing the growth and lessons along the way.
When I was in college studying Computer Science, I quickly fell in love with being a teaching assistant. Not because I necessarily wanted to be a teacher, but because I could work on my own skills and understanding of a subject and share my learnings with peers. It felt less like a student/teacher relationship, and more like we were learning together, walking along the same path. Sharing with others in this way is one of my favorite ways to connect with people!
That’s why I decided to create my own book. It’s a curation of the art I made throughout 2022, and I laid each piece out in chronological order. My skills improved and my style shifted a lot throughout the year. My intention is that as you flip through the pages, you get a sense of that evolution. If you’ve been building mastery in something yourself, I hope that my book serves as a reminder that growth isn’t linear and encourages you to just keep going.
