New mini pattern collection - The Planets!

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been feeling deeply connected to the cosmos in a spiritual kind of way. I think my 30th birthday may have triggered the woo woo in me.

So I’ve been illustrating the planets in our solar system. I started drawing them in my usual style and then got a little more loose and painterly with them.

I haven’t created any new patterns for a while now and felt the urge to get back into it. I decided to take these illustrations and see what I could turn them into. It resulted in this mini pattern collection!

It took me way longer to make these than I thought it would. These patterns seem so simple but getting the balance of all the motifs just right can take forever, especially when my perfectionist brain kicks in.

A big lesson I learned (which I’ve forgotten and relearned about 100 times now) is to step away when I start to feel frustrated.

I found myself tweaking all the elements and colors for hours. When I decided to finally walk away and I looked at the patterns again the next day, I thought they looked just fine.

Sometimes I will stare at a piece of art for too long and I can’t see it objectively anymore. It’s kind of like when you say a simple word over and over again until it no longer sounds like a real word.

Here’s hoping I actually remember this experience the next time I’m noodling away at something for way too long.
